Kirkwall, situated sort of in the center of the Orkney Islands, is the largest town, with around 10,000 people. We started our trip there, figuring Kirkwall was the center for a lot of things. We stayed in a cute little apartment up the hill from the main harbor with a lovely sun room to combat the gray, windy, chilly days.
A 15 minute walk took us down the hill to the Cathedral.
Past the cute mostly-walking-only street with shops and restaurants is the harbor, home of the RNLI (the lifeboat), the Orkney ferries, and the occasional cruise boat (most use the bigger dock across the harbor). Mom and I spent a lot of time out on the dock watching the boats.
We keep running into the World Traveler. We saw it in Iceland, then we saw it off the coast of Scotland north of Inverness, and now in Kirkwall.
And then the steep climb back up the hill to our place!
