Day 6 (May 31): East Iceland

The guidebook suggested the east Iceland was some of the least dramatic scenery - and I'd agree.

Here's an example of the lush, oasis fields by the campground, including a view of Vatnajökull National Park (glaciers) in the background.

And here's what the camping kitchen (probably original farmstead) looked like inside, with the bulk of the room underground and only the roof sticking up.

The stark landscape:

And another snow field laden pass:

Followed by, of course, a gorgeous waterfall:

We took a shortcut via 939 that was definitely shorter - but maybe not faster, since it was a dirt/gravel road. And found another waterfall!

Finally - the coast! We stopped in the little town of Djúpivogur.

Then continued along the coast. The clouds were low and often covered the top of the hills.

We camped that night at Stafafell Nature Park. It was a good thing we had cell services, because there was no sign, but it was open.
